Details
Tim Flach
Tim Flach was born in London in 1958 and studied fine art at Central St. Martin's College of Art and Design. He emerged with a fascination for photography, which has since led to numerous commissions, awards, solo exhibitions, and a presence in permanent collections and publications around the world. He is best known for the originality that he brings to capturing animal behaviour and characteristics. He often explores the close relationship between animals and humans, in particular how humanity imposes and reveals its ideals when trying to understand and work with animals.
EQUUS: the most spectacular and evocative collection of images of the horse ever made
EQUUS has been seven years in the making. Flach's journey began in his East End studio when he photographed a horse called Hassan, an Arabian who became the subject of a much-admired image called 'Horse Mountain'. As Tim explains, "a white shoulder and mane on black, the image manages to say more by having so little in it - it is a semi-abstract picture that has a level of ambiguity which resonates, a detail of a beautiful horse that at the
same time suggests a pristine snow-covered mountain. The attention this image received made me think that the horse was not a only a subject that fascinated me but that it also had a special connection for many other people. Somehow the image had punctured their consciousness and prompted them to respond".Inspired by this response, Flach embarked upon an ambitious attempt to depict equus - 'from ass to zebra, but mainly horses' - in its many guises, with a particular interest in the historic and ongoing relationship between man and horse. From the flared nostrils of a thoroughbred at full gallop to the toss of a finely combed mane, Flach evokes a human presence without permitting them into the frame. "My approach spans from the almost abstract to the documentary, at all times held together by a strongly conceptual link."
The EQUUS collection comprises abstract and artistic images, images taken in situ, and images best described as 'conceptual'. Seen in their entirety, the EQUUS collection is a complete narrative journey; the most evocative and compelling collection of images of equus every produced.
